Delicious Details

Lately, I've been finding that the things I love most about our house are the little details that I didn't put much thought into. It's kind of ironic how much time I've spent hemming and hawing over things like wall colors, accent colors, artwork, and how it's actually the tiny, everyday details that seems to matter so much more.

In my living room, it's the small stacks of books sitting by a comfy chair that I love most. They aren't just for show, but they are books that are picked up frequently, especially my little green leather-bound Bible. I love sitting here with a cup of tea and listening to the birds happily chirp outside as I read God's word.

In our bedroom, I love my little multi-functional nightstand that has pretty much everything I need neatly (ok, maybe not so neatly) tucked inside. Even though the drawer looks small, it holds a coaster for a nightime cup of tea, earplugs for unfortunate nights when my cat decides to wake up at 3:30 am, face lotion, whatever I'm currently reading, and kleenex. I love that even though it gets cluttered sometimes, I can open the drawer and swoop everything inside. Ahh. So nice and clean.

At the top of our stairwell, a little note that I made a few months ago is tucked into the mirror. If you can't see it, it says "Rejoice in the Lord always." I stuck it there a while ago, and it's become a great reminder to get my heart in the right place as I'm getting ready to leave the house, or even coming home for that matter!

Another one of those details that I love is where our bonsai tree is sitting. At first, I moved it there on this little orange table out of necessity because it's the brightest spot in our house and this guy needs a lot of light. But now, I love seeing it there everyday, and seeing the kitten curled up on the floor underneath it. I think it's her favorite spot in the house!

So what are the details you love most about your home? What makes you feel settled and "at home" the most?

  1. Um, your house looks beautiful and I am seriously jealous. I think we need a full tour ;-) The detail I love most about my house is the fact that we're moving away from this ugly mess next month and I can start fresh and create a home that actually reflects my style!

  2. Thanks Rachel! It's getting there... you know how it is with decorating your own home, the work is never quite done! =) I do have a tab at the top for a quick home tour, but the photos were taken with my old camera. I'm planning to replace them with new ones soon, but at least it could give you an idea! How exciting about your new place! I can't wait to see it.

  3. ooo i love the mirror and the bedside "M" cuteness to the max! <3

  4. I heart my handmade schtuff sprinkled in with the few decor stuff i've bought so far! though I cant wait for my OWN house to really get decorating! I'm sick of bare walls!!!!

I love all your little details! esp the bonsai tree!!!! super cute! <3

  5. Where did you get that "M"? I want one for Meri!

  6. Your home has such a feminine and delicate touch. I love your taste!

  7. I also have a favorite old chair. My husband nicknamed it the command center because I have my computer, knitting, and camera all within an arms reach.

Unfortunatley, in my house's current state of disruption, there aren't as many little details as I'd like. Hopefully some day I'll have more of them as rooms and projects are finished!

  8. Jenn- That's awesome! I love using handmade details too, it definitely makes a home your own. You will love really owning a home too, it's so wonderful to be able to paint and do more with it!

Meri- I got the letter from JoAnne Fabrics! It was super cheap too, it's just a cardboard form that you can paint or modge-podge or something.

Kristi- Why thank you, friend! I originally set out to make our house more gender-neutral, but it just didn't work. Thankfully the hubs doesn't really mind!

Ashley- Sounds wonderful! It's great to have your own "spot" in the house. I know how it is with having your home in chaos, it does seem to take a while to have things settle down and then you can really start to enjoy the smaller details. One step at a time! =)
