Backsplash is DONE!

The backsplash is done. And oh, what a difference it makes! It really brings out the white cabinets and pulls everything together. I love it! My husband did an amazing job. =) I helped lay a few of the tiles, but this project was definitely his baby.  Without further ado, here are more photos:

Say it with me: Ooooh, Aaaaaah!

Overall, this project cost us around $70. The tile was SO inexpensive. I worried for a bit that we would regret doing subway tile, because so many DIYers are going that route these days, but I don't feel that way now. It's just such a classic look, I think it will be "in" for years to come.

We still have to seal the grout, and add a couple more light switch covers, but it's pretty much finito. And so pretty to gaze upon.

Just for reference again, here's what the old kitchen used to look like:

Apparently, back then I didn't know that you're supposed to put away a few dishes and make your kitchen look a little less cluttered before getting all snap-happy with the camera. Oh well, it adds to the "before" effect. You know, like when they do makeovers on women and for the before picture they say "Ok, take off all your makeup, wear your most frumpy amish-housewife-type clothes, wash your hair in vegetable oil, and give me an expression that's somewhere between constipated and 'My husband just bought me a blender for our anniversary.'"

You know?

  1. Absolutely amazing. I'm so very jealous! I love everything about it. Your cow creamer is cute too. What a great guy!! By the way, should i not be using vegetable oil to wash my hair?

  2. THANKS! I love that little cow creamer. He just makes me smile. Um, yeah, vegetable oil is probably not the best choice. However, raw eggs will make your hair shiny! Just don't turn up the water heat too much... hehe.

  4. It looks beautiful! White subway tile is so classic. Also, I love your little cow creamer (my mom collected them) and also your before photo. Have you SEEN my kitchen before picture? At least yours doesn't look like it was snapped mid-frat party ;) Loving your kitchen!

  5. Cape on the corner- Yes! So exciting!

Jenn- Thanks dearie! We bought ours at menards! It was the cheapest we could find, but it's still great quality tile.

Anna- Thanks! I love sticking with classics in cases like this. =) I love that cow creamer too, got it on sale at target for like $3 or something outrageous like that. Too funny- I do remember your "before" pic! Hey, we gotta keep it real, right?

  6. Ahhhhhh!! So exciting!! The total transformation is incredible. Loving the subway tile. I think it was a great choice!

Also? I never pick up or put dishes/clothes/dog toys away. I should probably start doing something about that.

    1. Hahaha, I should clarify. I never pick up or put stuff away BEFORE TAKING PICTURES. I do actually clean my house on occasion. Ha!

    2. Meh, I think picking up your stuff before taking photos is overrated. I prefer the unpolished and fancy-free type of feeling. I know you do clean your house! however, are you like me and feel like it's ridiculous how easily houses get messy again? Ugh.

  8. So glad I found you blog thru the blog hop, I am waiting patiently to paint my kitchen cabinets, when the weather warms up a little. I have had my eye on the rustoleum kit for several months and was hoping that it worked well. I have old ugly oak cabinets that I want to paint black and distress and I really don't want to go thru that whole sanding etc. Glad to see that the kit worked so well, now that some time has passed how do you think they have held up? They look great in the pictures. Hope you will follow my progress this spring at www.yankeedoodledesigns.com

    1. Hi Karin! Thanks for finding my blog and following. =) We are still pretty happy with the way the cabinets have held up. There's only one small spot where paint has worn off, and it's because we didn't get all the old gloss off of the cabinets in that spot. So, it was user error. =) The only thing I will say is if you have a lot of cabinets you may want to invest in two kits to make sure you have enough coverage. We used the bigger kit, but with 3 coats of paint there was barely enough to make it through all of them! Good luck with your remodel!
